Growing up usually means hazarding a guess and sticking to it. You only learn by trying it all out. Nobody makes all the right choices, and what's right for Joe Schmoe next door might be wrong for you.
But that actually makes him think about things in a new light. It's true that whenever he has a big competition his ego swells more than normal, and he gets a little more teasing than usual too. He'd just assumed it was his Competition Persona, but maybe he's actually compensating for the nerves?? It's unnerving to think about.
